Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's father, a carnival barker, passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become a waitress or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth was raised in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in the school. After only two school years she left for an acting career. The route she took was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. As a hat check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make enough money with her ushering duties during the day while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. Drama studies led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
